21st Century grant programs at Mountain Sky

Overview of grant:

The 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant awarded to Mountain Sky Middle School will kick off classes on September 16!

The five year, federally funded program provides free before and after school programs, in addition to a summer school academy concentrating on student and community need. Academic intervention and enrichment activities help meet the core standards in academic subjects such as language arts and math. Enrichment and leadership activities focus on exploratory and elective classes. Community based services will focus on parenting classes to help engage parents and their families in their student’s learning.  

Goals:

The goal of the grant is to increase students’ academic level while promoting a positive, inviting student learning environment. Additional goals are to encourage parent and community engagement within the school.

Classes are offered both before and after school with bus transportation provided.

Transportation:

The school does provide transportation for our academy attendees.  

The after school buses typically leave by 5:10 p.m.  Depending on the number students in the academy programs and other after school activities, the bus should drop off students some time between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Before and After School Classes

AM Classes:

Morning classes are offered 7:30-8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Subzero Class:  Mr. Shockley concentrates on homework or study skills, focusing on math and language enrichment activities Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Art activities are offered on Wednesday and leadership activities on Friday.

PM Classes:

After school classes meet from 4:00-5:15 p.m., with a snack provided for students. Classes offered Monday through Thursday.

Students are invited to attend the academic classes by identification on AIMS scores for math, reading and / or writing. Selection is made due to data criteria, but all students have the opportunity to attend. Originally, students were sent an invitation letter home.

Academy Avengers offer Wednesday’s program from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. with a special format offering enrichment/exploratory classes. Currently Wednesday classes include:

Assessments

Assessments are completed through a variety of formats. They include individual teacher observations and evaluations, pre and post test, student portfolios, communication logs, Written Individualized Instructional Plan, measureable goals, AZELLA levels, Success Maker, Student Reading Inventory, Rosetta Stone and AIMS scores.

Mountain Sky Summer School Academy 

Classes will begin Monday, May 31st and continue through Thursday, June 22nd.  Classes will be held Monday-Thursday from 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM, which includes free breakfast (8:30 AM) and lunch.

Schedules:

Students will be given their schedules the first day of summer school in the cafeteria. 


Transportation:

If students will be dropped off and/or picked up from Mountain Sky, we ask that you use the West parking lot entrance on 7th Avenue, just south of Greenway.

If your student will be riding the bus to Mountain Sky, we will have a summer bus routes for the Mountain Sky Summer School Academy posted on Moday, May 22 on this website, along with approximate pick-up and drop-off times.  Please find the bus stop nearest to your residence and have your student(s) there approximately 10 minutes before the listed pick-up time. Please allow 10-15 minutes before and after each listed time for buses to arrive, as times are dependent upon traffic.
